Updated 6/1/2012: These are the most important things to know about blank blu-ray BD media:
Blank blu-ray discs are either single layer 25GB or dual layer 50GB.
Dual layer blu-ray media is quite expensive compared to single layer.
The term "Low to High" (LTH): BD-R LTH is a manufacturing process. These discs are less costly but don't work in as many players. If you have a new BD burner purchased in 2011 or newer you should have no problem with LTH discs, but if you've never burned before, it's best to buy some of each (non LTH as well as LTH) and test them.
LTH refers to a low to high manufacture process that is more efficient for the maker which generally means they cost less.
When you look at user reviews of media, many of the bad reviews come from people who purchase LTH blanks and have older our out of date drivers on their blu-ray burner.
The best media can have a 95%-100% burn success rate.
The worst media we've tested can have a 0%-25% success rate.
There is quite a difference between the best and worst. At this time, Verbatim or Yaiyo Yuden JVC is the best brand to purchase.
Amazon.com seems to have the best pricing on Verbatim Blu-ray BD-R blank discs. We do not recommend any other brand at this time. You may also want to try www.supermediastore.com or www.meritline.com
At this time,
Amazon.com seems to offer the best pricing for blank blu-ray BD-R Low to High media.
The following recommendations are for "low to High" LTH blank blu-ray discs so make sure your burnder is newer (purchased in 2011 or newer) to use LTH discs.
BD-R LTH is a Blu-ray write-once disc format. It describes a manufacturing process where they use an organic dye recording layer.
"Low To High" refers to the reflectivity of the disc. It changes from low to high during the burning process.
This is the opposite of normal non LTH method.
The advantage of BD-R LTH is to protect the manufacturer's previous investment in DVD-R/CD-R manufacturing equipment. Many makers of Blu-ray used to
make cds and dvds so this LTH method lets them use thier current equipment. They only need to modify their current disc burners. No investment in new production machines are needed.
Older Blu-ray players and recorders cannot read BD-R LTH. On the other hand, many blu-ray burner and player makers can offer a
a firmware upgrade. This can enable those players to read and/or burn BD-R LTH blank blu-ray media.
