6/12/2009: CloneDVD from Slysoft lacks CSS decryption support and CD-R support. This means you can't backup Hollywood movies or burn to a CD writer.

It does offer compression so you can compress a dual layer disc onto one, but most of the time, this would be for DVD movies, which can't be copied since CloneDVD can't decrypt them.

There are much better titles for just a few more dollars.

Pros:Cons:
Fairly Low price
Good compression
No CPRx enhanced copy protection removal technology
No Episodic support
No CSS Decryption
No Dual Layer support

Features: Clone DVD features include the ability to remove special features which may allow you to copy just the uncompressed movie (if not decrypted) onto one disc. There are several advanced settings to allow you to customize what goes onto your final DVD. We can't give this software a high rank because it lacks compression support and can't copy CSS decryption encoded DVDs (movies).
  • Video Preview shows an overview of all selectable DVD titles
  • You can include or exclude the original menu
  • Preferences: Memorizes the last settings that were made by the user and proposes it the next time the program starts
  • Writes on DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW
  • Warning: No episodic support
  • Warning: No CSS decryption support

Usability: Clone DVD is a pretty easy to use. We feel it lacks the most important features.

Installation & Setup: The installation was straightforward and easy.

Copy Quality & Compression: Quality is good. Compressed copies looked just like the originals, but you can't copy DVD movies since CSS decryption is not supported.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Windows® XP/2000/98/ME
  • An IBM compatible personal computer with a Pentium-Class Microprocessor at minimum 500 MHz.
  • CloneDVD requires Windows 98 / 98SE / ME with 128 MB RAM, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or better installed, Windows 2000 or Windows XP with 128 MB RAM.
  • If you use Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP you must be Administrator to install CloneDVD 2.
  • At least 1 DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W) Drive
  • About 5 GB of available temporary hard drive space are necessary to clone DVDs.
  • The faster the CPU (1 GHz recommended) and the more memory (256 MB recommended) you have, the better CloneDVD 2 is going to perform
